Chef Q and A: Little Jimmy’s Italian Ice

What do you do when you need a little extra cash and your kids loved slushies?

For Donna Jackson, the answer was simple. She started her own Italian ice business. If you’re in the youth sports circuit, you may run into Jackson and her Little Jimmie’s Italian Ice stand, at least if Jackson has any say in it.

Here’s more.

How did you get into the Jersey slush business?

I was looking for an avenue to create additional income plus do something that my sons would also enjoy. My sons would always want a slushie, but I didn’t like the idea of all that syrup that would eventually settle to the bottom, so I found a healthier and tastier alternative.

How long have you been making these?

I don’t actually make it. I order it from New Jersey. I have had the business for three months now and am actively trying to get my name out there.

Are you from Jersey?

I am from the North but not from New Jersey. I was born and raised in Maine and moved to Melbourne in 2001.

Most of my background is in the medical field as an administrative assistant, but I always dreamed of owning my own business. After my husband sold his landscaping and lawn care business that he had for seven years, it was my turn to try entrepreneurship.

Because I had been active in sports, this business fits in perfect at the ball field.

What is Jersey slush? What makes it unique?

It is actually true Italian ice and serves like ice cream, unlike some Italian ice that you buy in a small cup and that is so hard you can’t eat it.

Shaved ice has all that sugary syrup all over it, and then the syrup settles to the bottom. My Italian ice is premixed and doesn’t separate. It has no fat or cholesterol and is only 15 calories per ounce.

The Italian ice push cart has a line of customers with an almost empty stadium before the 1st Inning. The baseball helmet is a natural to sell Italian ice in at a baseball stadium. Amongst the roar of super hyped engines, Monster Trucks and the typical sounds that accompany the raceway track experience, Munchin Mike Longo captured his second National Eating Championship in two weeks. King George Van Laar, the crafty veteran who lost by a thimble of Italian Ice, rarely gets beat when it comes down to close finish.  However, may have underestimated the drive, focus and mental soundness that characterizes US Marine. Munchin Mike Longo, who showed that he is impervious to psychological warfare and that he is absolutely focused and driven when he conducts his mission of becoming one of Americas best Picnic Style Food Warriors. In third place was Ian The Invader Hickman, who was the pre-race favorite, seemed to struggle with his technique and approach, and appeared distracted and slightly confused at times. King George Van Laar one of the great Old School Food Warriors, must be given credit for his spirited come back attempt. The Monarch of Munch went into the final Championship Round trailing Longo by 1.25 Italian Ices and nearly closed the gap at the end.  Although The King was disappointed he did not bring the National Ice Eating title to his beloved state of New Jersey, he must still be given the royal treatment and credit for his Herculean effort in the Championship two minute speed round.

Sydnee Voigt, who is visiting her grandchildren from Brazil, was among his customers. Pina colada and watermelon ices went to the kids. “We’re just going to spend Labor Day together as a family,” Voigt said.

I am a new dealer for Little Jimmy’s Italian Ice and worked my first event on June 27th & 28th of 2009. I wanted to let you know how pleased I am with your product, service, and most importantly, our customer satisfaction. The event I worked was in Nashville, TN where most people are not familiar with Italian Ice, but we still served over 800 customers even though the weather was not favorable.

I was amazed at how many people we had who previously lived on the East Coast who were familiar with both New Jersey Ice and Little Jimmy’s quality products. We had another Italian Ice competitor about 45 yards from us in this event, and we had customers who bought from both of us. I received several unsolicited comments that our product was far superior to the product served by our competitor. (Repicci’s – A Franchised Product manufactured in TN) We had 2 vendors who walked all the way back to our booth in the hot sun after purchasing our competitor’s product. They asked us to throw their purchase from our competitor in our trash, and placed a replacement order with us. That blew my mind!

I had fun with our customers and would always ask them to taste the product to see if they liked it before leaving our booth. All responses were overwhelmingly positive that produced huge smiles. I usually asked them if they liked it as well as ice cream, and without exception the response I received was:  “Better!”  I was also amazed over how many requests I had for Chocolate that I had not included in my initial order. I could not be more pleased with the superior quality of your product.

We had numerous repeat sales, especially from other vendors working the show. This allowed us to outsell the competition by a minimum of 4 to 1. Most of the time our competitor’s booth was completely empty while we still had people lined up.

Quality does matter, and our experience proves people will line up for high quality foods! Thanks for such a great product and for doing such a great job!
