Chef Q and A: ’s

Aug 25, 2011

What do you do when you need a little extra cash and your kids loved slushies?

For Donna Jackson, the answer was simple. She started her own Italian ice business. If you’re in the youth sports circuit, you may run into Jackson and her Little Jimmie’s Italian Ice stand, at least if Jackson has any say in it.

Here’s more.

How did you get into the Jersey slush business?

I was looking for an avenue to create additional income plus do something that my sons would also enjoy. My sons would always want a , but I didn’t like the idea of all that syrup that would eventually settle to the bottom, so I found a healthier and tastier alternative.

How long have you been making these?

I don’t actually make it. I order it from . I have had the business for three months now and am actively trying to get my name out there.

Are you from Jersey?

I am from the North but not from New Jersey. I was born and raised in Maine and moved to Melbourne in 2001.

Most of my background is in the medical field as an administrative assistant, but I always dreamed of owning my own business. After my husband sold his landscaping and lawn care business that he had for seven years, it was my turn to try .

Because I had been active in sports, this business fits in perfect at the ball field.

What is Jersey slush? What makes it unique?

It is actually true Italian ice and serves like ice cream, unlike some Italian ice that you buy in a small cup and that is so hard you can’t eat it.

has all that sugary syrup all over it, and then the syrup settles to the bottom. My Italian ice is premixed and doesn’t separate. It has no fat or cholesterol and is only 15 calories per ounce.

AAARRRRGGGGHHH!

’s Ice Cart

pirate1 185x300 AAARRRRGGGGHHH!

pirate

So, we did our first event on July 23/24 the Loganberry Festival near our home on Whidbey Island, WA. Not a huge event, but made $475 each day! We were thrilled. We charged $3 probably over scooped a bit to make the serving look like the signage. Sold a few hats, but were so thrilled and trying to talk to folks about so many things, that we forgot to really push them, but when we did (for $5) no one blinked an eye. For the two days, from 10-5pm, we sold 4 containers, sold out at least an hour before closing on day and could have made more money if we hadn’t given out such big samples! We’re working on that. One lady asked if we do weddings-we said “sure!”

We decided since we live on an island, we would do a pirate theme and sell “Shiver-Me-Timbers! Pirate Ice.” We dressed like and it went over great. We must get into the talking like a pirate spirit though-LOL! Our family had a great time. Wad lines a few times, but for this, our “maiden voyage,” we were glad not to be “too” busy~! Just a nice stream of folks pretty constant after 11AM. Very pleased with our first event. And we are doing America’s night out this evening. Seems there are lots of events willing to let us get in later than we thought, as we got a late start this .

We made a small flyer in pirate talk to hand out that says we do events, openings, etc.

Will attach some pics of our “modded” cart. Hope you guys get a kick out of it!

Italian Ice in Cardboard Cans

June 30th, 2011 Dennis Moore Posted in News Videos | No Comments »

Our Ice cans are made of and are assembled by hand at our manufacturing plant in Elizabeth, .

Not only are our Cans () they also will increase your bottom line over in Plastic Cans.  Here is why-

IMG 03341 300x225 Italian Ice in Cardboard Cans

italian ice cardboard can

Jimmy’s Italian Ice is FLASH FROZEN in our freezer immediately after being made.  The frozen air from the FLASH FREEZER actually permeates the surface of the cardboard can causing it to freeze faster. Plastic cans on the other hand do not not have any air permeation and therefore freeze slower than cardboard cans therefore separating the Italian ice from the flavoring and leaving a Gooey/Syrupy Unusable  2- 3 inches at the bottom of the Plastic Can.

A couple of inches doesn’t sound like a lot of wasted product so I thought I would demonstrate to you how much this is actually costing you.

Each Inch of Italian Ice = 6.5 Servings (3 Scoops per Serving)

2 inches of Gooey, Syrupy, Unsellable Italian Ice on the bottom of a Plastic Italian Ice can equals 13 Wasted Servings.

Those 13 Wasted Servings out of a Plastic Can x $2/Serving = $26.00

Those 13 Wasted Servings out of a Plastic Can x $2/Serving = $39.00

You then would have to add $39 to whatever you are paying for your Italian Ice in Plastic Cans and that is the true cost of your Italian Ice.

Give us a call and start making more money by selling ’s Italian Ice in Cardboard cans.

Italian Ice Weather Forecast

Great in tomorrow!

They are already closing the schools 24 hours ahead of time because of the record setting that is being predicted for tomorrow.  Story here is from the Star Ledger-

9678542 large 300x199 Italian Ice Weather Forecast

Temperatures climbed into the mid- and upper-90s today in New Jersey, prompting city and school officials to take precautions against the heat.

Some schools ended classes at noon today, including the North Plainfield School District where officials decided to shorten school today and Thursday, said Marilyn Birnbaum, district superintendent.

“I know yesterday people were very happy that we made that decision. I think people really stress out over the heat,” she said shortly before classes let out today. Newark issued a heat advisory today and advised people to seek air-conditioned shelter during the day’s hottest hours: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The city set up several cooling centers for residents to take refuge from the heat. “I urge our senior citizens and Newark residents who lack air conditioning to come to one of our cooling centers, where they can find relief during this hot spell,” Newark Mayor Cory Booker said in a news release. The reason for these unseasonably high temperatures is a high-pressure system that’s sitting over much of the Eastern United States. Other systems aren’t moving through, meaning the heat lingers. Thursday will see similarly high temperatures throughout the state, and some cities will climb close to 99 degrees, said Lauren Nash, a National Weather Service meteorologist. “But Friday we’ll get a break — it’ll be 90,” Nash said. Libraries and community center in Woodbridge and Perth Amboy became cooling centers today as municipal leaders sought was to cool off their residents, and head off any health problems from the near-record breaking heat. In Woodbridge, town officials said residents could escape the heat in eight air-conditioned buildings, including the community center, four libraries, senior centers and town hall. Any residents without air condition or transportation should call the Division on Aging “Beat the Heat” program at (732) 855-0600, ext. 5023, or the township police at (732) 634-7700 for assistant. The township is loaning fans to senior or disabled residents without access to cooling devices. In Perth Amboy, the Jankowski Community Center on 1 Olive Street, and the city library at 196 Jefferson St, will be open until 5 p.m., and the gymnasium at the Raritan Bay Area YMCA at 357 New Brunswick Ave. will be open until 9:45 p.m. Residents can get information about the centers by calling (732) 826-0290, ext 4006.
